5 Anxiety Coping Mechanisms for International Students

5 Anxiety Coping Mechanisms:A lot of things can cause mental stress and anxiety disorders for students. They range from family expectations, settling debts, huge academic workloads to low grades and difficulty in combining work with study. In the face of this, what anxiety coping mechanisms can international students adapt to weather these storms?

The good news is that if this is you; you’re about to find out you’re not alone and anxiety can be managed. These techniques can help a great deal:

  • Stay positive
  • Practice mindfulness exercises
  • Water therapy
  • Connect to nature
  • Strengthen your social connection

1. Stay Positive

Anxiety is a reaction to stress so if you take care of your stressors, your anxiety will take care of itself. Let’s say you’re stressed about your poor academic performance in the last test or exam, this will weigh you down and make you feel anxious.Image result for african american students in distress

Rather than dwell on the poor performance, shift your mind to seeing the possibility of doing better subsequently. Being positive can make you relax and ease anxiety.

2. Practice Mindfulness Exercises

As aforementioned, stress can lead to anxiety, anxiety, and thereafter, lead to depression. This is detrimental to your mental health. In order to weather this storm, try practising mindfulness exercises.

To do this successfully, you can attend yoga classes, read about different mindfulness exercises and listen to audio mindfulness meditations. You can also attend meditation classes or retreats and practise mindfulness on your own.

3. Water Therapy

Because water is life, it is amazing the many benefits that can be derived from drinking water. One of such benefits is the relaxing effect it has on the body which reduces stress and anxiety. Take the liberty to drink a lot of water daily.

You can also take hot baths before bedtime using aromatic oils; this will do magic to your mind and body because water therapy is an anxiety coping mechanism international students shouldn’t ignore.

4. Connect to Nature

International students get so busy with school and work that often, they don’t have time for other things. However, it is important to break away from the routine every now and again by connecting to nature. Ecotherapy reduces symptoms of depression caused by stress and anxiety and improves your mental health. So, spend more time with nature.

5. Strengthen your Social Connections

Students experiencing anxiety shouldn’t be alone but rather, rely on a strong support system. Sharing your anxieties with friends, loved ones and professionals will help.

Spending time with friends doing things you love can cheer you up and help you relax; so also, receiving support and encouragement from them can ease away your anxieties. Always reach out!

It is not unusual to experience anxiety in the course of your study. What matters most is adopting the right anxiety coping mechanisms to handle the situation in order to bounce back better.
